Man detained in California arson probe - CNN.com

By the CNN Wire Staff

54 fires over four days in Los Angeles

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Authorities believe the suspect is a foreign national from Germany
  • Harry Burkhart, 24, was charged with one count of arson of an inhabited dwelling
  • He will likely face more charges as the investigation continues, the mayor says
  • The fires caused some $3 million in damages

Los Angeles (CNN) -- A 24-year-old man was charged Monday with arson in connection with a rash of car and building fires across the Los Angeles area, authorities said.

Harry Burkhart was charged with one count of arson of an inhabited dwelling and will likely face additional charges as the investigation moves forward, said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

Arson investigators counted 52 fires, most starting in parked cars, since Friday morning, but none since the man was was detained at 3 a.m. Monday, according to officials.

Burkhart is currently being held without bail.

"These were serious and potentially deadly crimes that needlessly endangered thousands of innocent lives," Villaraigosa told reporters. "These crimes will not be tolerated."

Burkhart is believed to a foreign national from Germany, according to Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck.

Authorities hope, and believe one arsonist acted alone, but will behave as though he did not until they know for sure, Beck said.

Burkhart's arrest came when a sheriff's deputy stopped a van near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue in Hollywood early Monday, said Los Angeles Fire Capt. Jaime Moore. The van matched the description of a vehicle believed related to some of the suspicious fires and the driver resembled a man seen in a surveillance video near the scene of one fire, he said.

The video showed a man who appears to be in his late 20s to mid-30s, with a ponytail, dark hair and a receding hairline.

No one was killed or seriously injured in the fires, though one firefighter and one civilian sustained minor injuries, said Los Angeles City Fire Chief Brian Cummings. Both he and the mayor estimated the fires caused some $3 million in damages.

Among the homes damaged was one that was once occupied by the Doors frontman Jim Morrison.

Eleven of the fires took place overnight, in the very early hours of Monday: nine within the city of Los Angeles and two in West Hollywood, fire department spokesman Cecco Secci said.

Cars were set on fire in Hollywood and Van Nuys, Moore said.

Los Angeles has not seen such a rash of fires since the city's riots in 1992.

CNN's Irving Last, Josh Levs, Drew Griffin, Stan Wilson and Casey Wian contributed to this report.

Cowboys lose to Giants 31-14, miss playoffs again (AP)

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? The Dallas Cowboys bookended their disappointing season with losses at the Meadowlands ? defeats that kept them out of the playoffs.

Most agonizing was Sunday night's 31-14 flop against the New York Giants, who took the NFC East title and sent the Cowboys home without a postseason berth. Dallas (8-8) opened 2011 with a 27-24 loss to the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

A win in either game could have made a world of difference.

"It's extremely painful and it's a damn shame," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. "We have a good team and I thought we would be going to the playoffs, but that didn't happen."

Because of Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, it didn't. Manning threw three touchdown passes, including a 74-yarder to Cruz, and the Giants (9-7) claimed the final spot in the NFL playoffs. New York took a 21-0 halftime lead and though Dallas got within seven points in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys really weren't a match for the Giants.

The Cowboys lost four of their final five games in their first full season under coach Jason Garrett.

"They got the lead and made it stand up," said Tony Romo, who posted decent numbers despite a right hand injury, but was sacked six times. "It's never a good feeling when you lose. We put so much time and effort into winning this and we came out and didn't play our best."

Not even close. And when they got within striking distance, the Cowboys fell apart on defense, particularly on a 44-yard jump ball pass to Cruz that turned things back in New York's favor.

That led to a field goal, and the Giants added another TD on a 4-yard pass to Hakeem Nicks after Manning hit him for 36 yards on the previous play.

"I mean it comes down to this game is about players," Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking said, "and this game is about players making plays, and we didn't do that. We were very efficient in that all year, but we obviously didn't do that tonight."

New York won three of its final four games for 65-year-old coach Tom Coughlin and earned a wild-card home game next Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons (10-6).

"I knew we were going to fight and keep playing until the end, I feel good about the way we're handling the ups and downs, and it comes down to finishing," Manning said after throwing for 346 yards and no interceptions.

"We've had a lot of ups and down, but when our team needed it most we responded," said the up-and-coming Cruz, who has capped his team-record setting season with six catches for 178 yards. "We were able to keep levelheaded when we were on the four-game skid."

Dallas was its own worst enemy in a game with the season on the line. It missed tackles on all three of the Giants' three first-half touchdowns, failed to recover two fumbles within its grasp in the half and failed to convert on Romo's sneak on fourth-and-1 at the Giants 10 while trailing 21-7.

Romo moved the Cowboys in the second half but all he could generate were touchdown passes of 34 and 6 yards to Laurent Robinson, the last one getting Dallas within 21-14 with 10:15 to play.

Cruz, however, had the 44-yard third-down catch and another for 20 yards to set up Lawrence Tynes' 28-yard field goal and Manning iced the game with the TD pass to Nicks with 3:41 to play.

Manning finished 24 of 33 as the Giants beat the Cowboys for the second time in four games and ended a regular season marked by inconsistency on a high note. Cruz, who set a single-season record for yards receiving, did his touchdown salsa after the first score.

Romo was 29 of 37 for 289 yards but he was always under pressure, including twice being sacked by Osi Umenyiora, who returned to the lineup for the first time since spraining an ankle late last month. Dallas' final possession ended with Romo being sacked by Justin Tuck and losing a fumble.

"We needed this win," Umenyiora said. "This is the biggest win we've been a part of for a while."

The Giants haven't won a postseason game since beating the-then unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in February 2008, and one thing seemingly apparent is this team is peaking.

Coming off a 29-14 win over the local rival Jets last week in what might have been the Giants' best game of the season, Coughlin's team put together another outstanding 30 minutes in jumping to the 21-0 halftime lead.

Cruz, who sparked the win over the Jets' with a team-record 99-yard touchdown, made another monster play on the Giants' second offensive series, turning a short pass into points.

Cruz caught a short square out, eluded a tackle by Terence Newman, turned the corner after getting a seal block from Nicks and outraced two defenders down the sideline in front of the Giants bench for a 7-0 lead.

Dallas went three-and-out but had a chance to get right back into the game when Will Blackmon muffed a punt at near his 30-yard line and Alan Ball failed to recover.

Ahmad Bradshaw made Dallas pay with his 5-yard TD run. Safety Abram Elam had a chance to tackle Bradshaw in the backfield and Bradshaw scooted into the end zone after he missed.

Manning had passes of 14 and 12 yards to rookie fullback Henry Hynoski in an 80-yard touchdown drive just before the half. Bradshaw, who had a 29-yard run early in the drive, broke a tackle by linebacker Bradie James in scoring on a 10-yard swing pass for a 21-0 lead.

The Giants had chances to put the game away in the third quarter. They moved to the Dallas 42 on the opening possession of the second half and elected to punt.

Romo then drove the Cowboys 94 yards with a no-huddle offense, hitting Robinson on a 34-yard go pattern down the right sideline on a play that cornerback Corey Webster was beaten.

An interception by safety Antrel Rolle gave New York the ball in Dallas territory but they failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at the Dallas 35 and the Cowboys came right back to cut the deficit to seven.

Bright spots, dark clouds ? Obama seeks right tone (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Bullish yet wary, President Barack Obama is highlighting recent economic bright spots while taking care not to overstate a recovery that still has not put millions back to work.

His Republican rivals, in the face of late-arriving economic good news, are making slight adjustments themselves, arguing that Obama's policies have been a drag on a recovery that could have taken hold sooner.

The competing rhetoric reflects the positive indicators in areas ranging from retail sales and housing to unemployment and falling gas prices. All this has pushed up consumer confidence, a potential barometer of political attitudes. Even Congress and Obama managed to agree on a two-month payroll tax cut extension before leaving Washington for the holidays.

But the economic signs could prove fleeting, as they were in the early spring when economist also detected upticks in activity only to watch them tumble. These new indicators may hold more promise. But a looming European debt crisis is casting a pall.

No one is more aware of that risk than Obama.

"We've got an economy that is showing some positive signs; we've seen many consecutive months of private sector job growth," Obama said last week before departing for Christmas in Hawaii. "But it's not happening as fast as it needs to."

For Obama, the danger is in promoting an economy that while, slowly recovering, has yet to reflect reality for millions of Americans, or in highlighting positive signs only to see them falter in 2012.

For David Axelrod, the Obama campaign's top political adviser, visions of a European financial meltdown are what keep him awake at night.

"I think the American economy is gaining strength, I don't think many would argue that point," he said. "The imponderable is not about that, it's really about these externalities and particularly Europe. Especially now that we've passed this threshold on the payroll tax cut and assuming that the Republicans in Congress don't want to rerun that battle, the one big thing on the horizon is Europe."

Indeed, as the year ends on an up note, leading economists surveyed by The Associated Press expect the economy will grow slightly faster in 2012 ? about 2.4 percent compared with the less than 2 percent annual growth that the economy is expected to register by the end of this year.

But underscoring the political challenges facing Obama, these same economists don't expect unemployment to drop much in a year from November's 8.6 percent rate.

The public's economic outlook is improving. An Associated Press-GfK poll in December found that 37 percent of those questioned expect improvement in the economy in the coming year. It was the first time since May that the sentiment significantly outweighed the share saying the economy would get worse in the next year.

This modestly rosy scenario is contingent on keeping any financial disruptions in Europe contained to the other side of the Atlantic. Obama has pressing European leaders, particularly German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, to act swiftly to avoid a wholesale debt crisis from taking hold. But Obama has few tools other than persuasion with which to influence an outcome.

In a trend the Obama camp is sure to watch, the public is holding Obama more accountable for the economy. The AP-GfK poll found that the percentage who says Obama deserves little or no blame for the economy's sluggishness has declined from 43 percent in October to 36 percent now.

Republicans are watching, too.

After months of asserting that conditions under Obama have worsened, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney this past acknowledged signs of improvement, but gave Obama no credit.

"I think the economy's getting better. I sure hope so," Romney told CNN on Wednesday. "There's never been a time when our economy has not recovered from recession. We will recover, but it will not be thanks to the president's policies. It will be in spite of the president's policies."

Republican pollster Wes Anderson, a veteran of congressional and presidential contests, says the first quarter of 2012 could lay down crucial markers that could affect the election results.

"If the uptick in economic indicators that we've seen here this month continues into the next month at the same general pace, it will be an interesting race and it will be very close, and there will be an opportunity for Obama to win," he said. "If economic conditions deteriorate at all, I think he's done.

"If they pick up significantly in the first quarter ? I don't know what that is, but something that is tangible for middle-class America ? he probably gets re-elected," Anderson said.

The White House is ready to have the president maintain a high economic profile, showcasing his bailout of the auto industry as a concrete example of an administration policy that saved job. Beyond that, Obama's team wants to portray the president as a champion of the middle class.

"The battle is really over the long term because the Republicans have a fundamental theory that we can cut our way to prosperity ? cut taxes for the wealthy, cut regulations, especially for Wall Street, and the economy will flourish," Axelrod said. "We've tested that theory and it failed. Badly."

"This notion that he's been there, we should fire him and we should go back to what we were doing before the crisis is not a very strong argument," Axelrod said. "And obviously to the degree that the economy improves it becomes less of an argument."

Still, even economists friendly to the administration see contradictory signals in the end-of-year upswing.

On the positive side, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits has dropped to the lowest level since April 2008. At the same time, November's dip in unemployment from 9 percent to 8.6 percent was partly the result of frustrated workers leaving the labor force and no longer looking to be hired. The private sector is hiring, but states, school districts and local municipalities are shedding jobs. Also, despite an increase in consumer spending, Americans are not seeing real income growth.

"For every positive indicator, there is an indicator on the other side that's worrisome," said Jared Bernstein, former chief economist to Vice President Joe Biden who's now with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics whose data is often cited by Democrats and Republicans, said that for all the encouraging signs, the economy still faces drags. That includes deficit reduction measures that helped reduce the debt in the long term but could cost the economy 1 percentage point in growth next year.

Washington politics poses its own challenges.

"I don't think 2012 is going to be a break out year for the economy," he said. "It is an election year and there is going to be a fair amount of political acrimony back and forth. People in business are already on edge. It doesn't take a lot for them to remain anxious and nervous."

Mitt Romney: Obama Promises As Good As Kardashian Wedding Vows

Mitt Romney made an unusual dig at President Obama on Sunday, comparing him to Kim Kardashian.

"I?ve been looking at some video clips on YouTube of President Obama, then candidate Obama, going through Iowa making promises," he said. "I think the gap between his promises and his performance is the largest I?ve seen, well, since the Kardashian wedding and the promise of til death do we part."

Romney's comments came at a campaign stop in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The GOP candidate has recently doubled down on courting Iowa voters in a last minute push to win the January 3rd caucus.

The Kardashian reference is one of a few recent attempts for Romney exhibit cultural awareness. The candidate, who is generally known for his lack of pop culture savvy, made a reference to I Love Lucy last week and in May, claimed that his favorite book is Twilight. In 2008, he famously took heat after randomly quoting the song "Who let the dogs out?"

This isn't the first time Romney has compared Obama to a famous female, either. He likened the president to deposed French queen Maria Antoinette on Friday.

Romney's efforts seem to be paying off-- a recent Des Moines Register poll showed him in the lead.

Opposing Views: GOP candidates urged to accept climate change by scientists by Andrew Restuccia

Fifty New Hampshire scientists Thursday called on the Republican presidential candidates to accept the ?overwhelming? scientific evidence behind climate change.

The scientists issued the joint statement just weeks before the Jan. 10 New Hampshire primary, a key early test for the GOP White House hopefuls.

"We urge all candidates for public office at national, state, and local levels, and all New Hampshire citizens, to acknowledge the overwhelming balance of evidence for the underlying causes of climate change, to support appropriate responses to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases, and to develop local and statewide strategies to adapt to near-term changes in climate,? the scientists said.

?Ignoring the issue of climate change places our health, our quality of life, our economic vitality, and our children?s future at risk.?

The GOP presidential candidates have raised questions about climate science, a politically thorny issue in Republican circles.
