Audi A3 with MMI Touch gesture-based entertainment system hands-on (video)

CeBIT isn't an auto show in the traditional sense, but we are in Germany after all, so we weren't terribly surprised to see Audi roll up with a brand new car. The latest A3 made its worldwide debut today, bringing with it that wheel-based menu navigation interface we saw in its prototype phase. The touchpad sits atop the jog-wheel and shrinks things down considerably compared to the original version found in the 7-series. To keep things nice and safe, Audi devised a system that recognizes letters you draw with your finger, enabling drivers keep their eyes on the road while selecting music, making calls or setting a destination in the GPS. Also, as is apparently the norm these days, there's Facebook and Twitter integration -- the car can even read updates as you drive. If you know, you can't wait until you're parked.

As you might have gathered, the A3 is a connected vehicle, with a SIM slot or Bluetooth connection providing the car's link to the outside world. It offers another curious addition, too: a "Phone Box" signal boosting system. Details are sparse, but we do know there's an external antenna that relays the signal back to the handset. That particular feature is compatible with any phone you care to toss inside, and requires a wired connection only for charging (the box itself is amplified, so anything that sits within the enclosure will reap those boosting benefits). We managed to get the first hands-on demo with the car, and you can see all those new toys in the video and galleries below.

Five Favorite Films with Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt arrived proper for most audiences as Meryl Streep's sarcastic, binge-dieting assistant in The Devil Wears Prada -- in which she stole many a scene from the Oscar legend -- and since then has proved a versatile star across all kinds of genres, be they comedy, drama, sci-fi and most things in between. She'll soon be headlining The Five-Year Engagement, Nicholas Stoller's comedy reunion with Jason Segel (for whom she appeared in The Muppets), trading quips with Colin Firth in Arthur Newman, Golf Pro, and starring in Rian Johnson's (Brick) much-anticipated time-travel thriller, Looper.

This week, Blunt co-stars opposite Ewan McGregor in Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, director Lasse Hallstr?m's picturesque comedy-drama about a fisheries expert enlisted by an eccentric sheik to bring a river to the Arabian desert. We had the chance to speak with the actress recently about the movie, her friendship with McGregor, and some of her forthcoming projects. Read on for that, but first -- here are her five favorite films.

Jaws (Steven Spielberg, 1975; 100% Tomatometer)

Jaws is my favorite film of all time. I've seen it about 30 times. Even though it has a ludicrous backdrop of them trying to find this Great White shark, I think it's a film about people and relationships -- and I just think the performances are fantastic. It has amazing characters and it has this very commercial, suspenseful backdrop, so I do think it's a perfect movie.

All that, and the shark didn't even work.

All that for a shark that didn't work. And you know what -- thank god it didn't, because not seeing the shark is just... I know so many people worldwide who became victims of Steven Spielberg and will not go in the water, so it's probably a good thing that the shark didn't work.

Were you one of those victims?

Yeah. For a long time, and I'm still terrified of them. I just started diving and I really love it, and that's helped me become friends with the sharks again -- 'cause I went diving with the Grey Reef sharks and Blacktip sharks, and that was extraordinary. And I realized they're not actually out to just tear my guts out, they're just wanting to be left alone.

Not all of them -- just that one.

[Laughs] Yeah, just that one enormous one.

Kramer vs. Kramer makes me weep. I love that offset of the dynamic, of the father being the main caretaker and his life being put into uproar in trying adapt and take care of this little boy. I love the perseverance of that film, and it makes me bawl my eyes out. I think that little boy is extraordinary in it; obviously he's not a little boy any more, but he'll always be that little boy to me.

Princess Bride is obviously a given; everyone loves that and can quote it. [Laughs] I've seen that many times as a child and it swept me away every time. I loved it.

I'm picturing an odd childhood with you oscillating between that and Jaws.

Yeah that's it. My dad would always come home with inappropriate movies like The Terminator and Jaws and my mum would insist on me watching The Princess Bride and all the Disney films. [Laughs]

I think it's a timeless movie. You watch it now and it hasn't dated one inch. I think it's incredibly... it's just staggering, and it's so moving. That's a really brilliantly directed movie.

I just really got swept away by it. I think that final moment when he gets the book -- remember that scene? I'll never forget the expression on his face when he gets that book. You realize there're these moments in movies that just stay with you forever; it's wonderful. You get these imprinted moments: a line or a word, or a look, and they stay with you forever.

Next, Emily Blunt on working with Ewan McGregor for Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, her collaborations with Jason Segel, and reprising her Devil Wears Prada character.

Fault?s twists may shake up earthquake forecasts

Deep angles along San Andreas mean temblors may be stronger than predicted

Web edition : 5:43 pm

A new twist on the San Andreas fault could shake up southern Californians preparing for the Big One.

The southern San Andreas isn?t vertical in most places, as previously thought. Instead, it twists in opposite directions along its length, a new study finds, meaning a rupture might shake some places harder than current forecasts predict.

?We now have a picture of a propeller-shaped San Andreas,? says Gary Fuis, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, Calif. Fuis and his colleagues report the new findings in the February Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.

This shape could make the San Andreas ? parts of which have been locked and building up strain as the Pacific and North American plates try to slide past each other ? even more hazardous.

?The dipping geometry may allow for significantly larger earthquakes,? says Roland Burgmann, a geophysicist at the University of California, Berkeley. Tilted faults pack more surface area into a given depth, potentially releasing more energy when they break.

Scientists took advantage of magnetic rocks that abut parts of the San Andreas to help reveal the fault?s orientation. In computer simulations developed by Fuis? team, only a tilted fault could explain patterns in the magnetic fields produced by these rocks. Measurements of seismic waves created by small quakes and manmade explosions ? which travel at different speeds depending on a fault?s orientation ? helped to fill in the picture in other places, as did data showing differences in gravity?s pull along the fault.

In its northern reaches, the fault leans to the southwest. As it snakes to the south, the San Andreas becomes vertical in the Mojave Desert. Closer to Mexico, it dips to the northeast, cutting into Earth?s crust at an angle of 37 degrees near San Bernardino, Calif.

Forecasts designed to predict how hard different places will shake when there?s a massive rupture in the southern San Andreas ? which hasn?t happened since 1857 ? might change when these new angles are taken into account.

A quake on a leaning fault can shake land harder on one side of the fault than the other. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake near San Francisco shook the town of Watsonville, which is south of the fault, twice as hard as it hit San Jose, which is the same distance away but to the north.

But exactly how quakes might shake out in southern California won?t be known until the forecasts have been recalculated.

?We?re adding this to our collection of 3-D fault representations ? used to characterize seismic hazards in California,? says Andreas Plesch, a geologist at Harvard University.
